The Woodcutter by Reginald Hill

This is a brilliant book, and I thoroughly recommend it. Wolf Hadder, as a teenaged boy, falls in love with a girl that socially outranks him. She sets him three impossible tasks, which he achieves, and their romance continues from there. Everything falls apart many years later when he is arrested for fraud and paedophilia.

The book is full of intricate details that form a fine web full of destruction. We follow Wolf through years of hard work and patience until the day finally comes when he can be free. This book is a work of genius, bringing together the minds of many characters and their deviant natures. It is a tale of class, money, and social rising. It is also a cautionary tale, warning us about trust and who we give it to.
