Safe With Me by K. L. Slater

Anna doesn’t have much in life but what she does have is carefully tended. Even the people on her delivery round get special attention until her boss notices how late she gets back to the depot. As one thing after another begin to slip, Anna’s life loses the order she loves, and she doesn’t know who to turn to. Liam becomes her fixation but is there more to him than meets the eye?

This novel is full of sinister undertones and there were too many possibilities to be able to guess where the danger really lay. Anna’s innocence is in complete contrast to her actions and the reader is left feeling uncomfortable. As a regular consumer of thrillers, I found this one to be quite different from others in the same genre and that’s a refreshing change.

Bear Faced Lies: A shifter Romance Novella by Merryn Dexter

Harriet’s bad luck just doesn’t seem to let up so when a handsome stranger helps her out at the cattle market she doesn’t get her hopes up. When he offers her help on the ranch, she’s reluctant after everything she’s been through but his calm manner and easy way with animals are too good to let go. It doesn’t take long before her work-based interest and her lonely heart intertwine but they both have baggage. Will Harriet end her spell of bad luck and will Tobias divulge his secret?

This is a cute shifter romance with an edge. It was an easy read with likeable characters although Tobias’ use of the word ‘sweetheart’ was a little too frequent for my liking. I did, however, really enjoy the addition of Clyde who gave the ranch a proper old cowboy feeling.

Bear Faced Lies

The Accidental Sire (Half-Moon Hollow #6) by Molly Harper

Who plays ultimate Frisbee with weights, anyway?

When a vampire game turns into a tragedy at a human-vampire mixer, Megan finds herself turning to the vamp side. That near death experience is the beginning of a run of bad luck for Megan and anyone who gets close to her. Between Jane’s expert guidance and her newfound skills, not to mention a new on-off boyfriend, can Megan get to the bottom of the mystery that she has become?

This is another great example of Harper’s work. A mixture of sweet, sexy, and funny with an extra dose of Southern humour and you’ve got a great read. I’m even getting used to the freaky child vampire with the psychotic tendencies. The only thing I will say about this author is that she doesn’t write quick enough, I’m ready for the next instalment.

Accidental Sire

To Buy a Wife (The Dark Future #1) by K. C. Klein

In Hudson’s world, it isn’t just customary to buy a wife but also necessary for the security of his farm. When he sees the beautiful prisoner on the executioner’s block he jumps in like a white knight but Lake isn’t a damsel in distress and she quickly lets him know. Having spent everything he had on this one chance can he make her stay?

I love a romance set in a dystopian future and this one has an intriguing back story. Women always seem to get the rough end of the deal when it comes to the future but Lake isn’t taking her lot without a fight. Klein’s ability to create a realistic and interesting world in a dystopian future is what sets this book apart from other romances of its kind but it is also an easy read. I’m looking forward to finding out what the next book has in store for us.

Frost Security: Richard by Glenna Sinclair

Jessica’s simple, happy life begins to disappear the moment her silent business partner dies. A few calls she can handle but when her friend suggests a security firm, she figures it can’t hurt. Inextricably being drawn to her security detail while dealing with ever increasing threats all semblance of her peaceful, happy life disappears. It doesn’t take long before the world as she knows it is shattered.

This is a romantic suspense, and the story contains plenty of suspense, threat, and malice but the romance is a little light for my taste. There’s no magical build-up and I think that lets the book down. Jessica is a nice enough character, and she is going through something traumatic but I would still expect to feel more during the so-called romantic moments. Richard is a fairly well-developed character, and I wanted to hear more angst, more feeling.

The ongoing story that will carry the series is sound and I would like to know what happens next but this particular story ended without really resolving the two main characters’ issues and that was disappointing. Still, the next book in the series may well appear on my Kindle.

Sleep Tight (DCI Tom Douglas #3) by Rachel Abbott

Olivia’s world is destroyed when her boyfriend walks out on her and their baby. When her parents die just a couple of weeks later she falls into the protective arms of the man who has just purchased her flat. Olivia’s life might be safe but it becomes increasingly narrow and her freedom is restricted but after an attempt to rectify that she fears that she will be bound forever, a prisoner within her own life.

In this complicated plot, Abbott has yet again shown the strength that her female characters are capable of. This novel had me on the edge of my seat because things are always twice as scary when you put children into the mix. The psychological element really shines through and DCI Tom Douglas and his side-kick Becky worked well untangling the mystery.

Extracted (Extracted Trilogy #1) by R. R. Haywood

When three extraordinary people wake up in a concrete bunker, they are understandably confused but over the next few days and then weeks things will become even more surreal. Inventing a time machine is great until it interferes with the world’s ability to exist at all. What they need are three highly intelligent, highly trained individuals to right the wrongs but extracting these people isn’t as easy as it sounds and keeping them focus turns out to be even harder.

As time travel novels go this one is high action and intriguing. The science is balanced nicely with the turmoil inside the characters’ minds. Haywood has created three well-developed and emotive characters with entirely different backgrounds, cultures, and personalities and has shown all the conflict expected and more when all three are put together at a time of extreme stress. Needless to say, I’m hooked on the characters just as much as the story itself.
