Miss Frost Saves the Sandman: A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost #3) by Kristen Painter

Miss Frost saves the sandman

Author’s Synopsis

Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town that celebrates Halloween 365 days a year. Jayne Frost is a lot of things. Winter elf, Jack Frost’s daughter, Santa Claus’s niece, heir to the Winter Throne and now… private investigator. Sort of.

When the Sandman comes to Santa’s Workshop, the shop Jayne manages, to do his first ever book signing, it’s a major event. He’s kind of a supernatural celebrity and she needs to keep him happy. All is well until trouble shows up at the party thrown in his honor. Trouble in the form of Luna Nyx, the Mistress of Nightmares and his creepy counterpart. The Sandman’s assistant says Luna is dangerous, and Jayne believes it when her dreams turn dark. Can Jayne keep the Sandman safe from this gothic goddess? Or will Luna’s threats put them both to sleep for good?

My Views

Jayne Frost is back along with a few friends including the adorable Spider, her talking cat. Not only is she dating two of the best-looking men in town but she’s also right at the heart of yet another crime. Who knew a winter elf could have so much fun?

I am a little addicted to Spider. Jayne is great fun, but the cat is my favourite character. This story is yet another easy read mystery with a light and breezy feel. The magic and mystery are charming as are the characters. I must admit that I can’t wait to find out who Jayne chooses out of her eager dates but my money is on the vampire.

Crash (Westside Wolf Pack #1) by Zoe Perdita

Author’s Synopsis

The sexy tattooed wolf threw away his chances of ever becoming pack alpha at seventeen, and Ben, the pack’s omega, has no idea why. Ben Singer has been in love with Axel from the time they were teenagers. Ben thought they were mates, but Axel tore Ben’s heart into pieces and stomped that dream into the mud.

When Axel’s uncle kicks Ben out of their Pittsburgh pack, it’s the chance the omega has been waiting for. Then Axel demands to accompany the smaller wolf. He’s determined to go with Ben, even if the omega doesn’t want him around. While desire stirs between Axel and Ben, years of heartache haunt them. Can the alpha and omega let go of their past in order to find a bright new future together?

My Views

This book captivated me immediately. Ben’s character is warm and eternally hopeful and as the story progresses we see just how strong he is. Axel’s hardship is heartbreaking but the tough character wears it like a badge of honour as any knight in shining armour would. Perdita unfolds pieces of backstory along the way and it flows smoothly against the current time plot, creating a highly emotive and un-put-downable novel.

How to Date Your Dragon (Mystic Bayou #1) by Molly Harper

When Jillian’s career takes her to Mystic Bayou, Louisiana, she thinks it’s a simple case of documenting the facts and learning about the shifter species. When one of her interviewees turns up dead her warm reception turns a little frosty but a dash romance can heat things back up. She quickly realises that Mystic Bayou has a little more magic than the average town.

This is a great introduction to a promising new series. I’m already a big fan of Harper’s work, particularly when it’s on audiobook, and it looks like she has plenty more to give. Jillian is her typical flawed but sweet character and the mixture of humour and romance is just right. I’m hoping book two finds a date for the mayor.

Blood Fury (Black Dagger Legacy #3) by J. R. Ward

Novo doesn’t need a man to make her strong, she wrote the book on female independence but she seems to have one large weakness. Peyton’s aristocratic focus is off centre and he can’t seem to keep it in check even when the stakes are high. Saxton’s broken heart begins to heal but the fates may have other plans.

This all-action episode in the Brotherhood mansion has plenty of suspense and a boatload of heartache so be prepared, there will be tears. Ward has built a vast world filled to the brim with alpha males of all kind and then topped it up with strong females.

I don’t think I’ve come across such addictive stories before, I can’t wait to read the next one.

Bear Faced Lies: A shifter Romance Novella by Merryn Dexter

Harriet’s bad luck just doesn’t seem to let up so when a handsome stranger helps her out at the cattle market she doesn’t get her hopes up. When he offers her help on the ranch, she’s reluctant after everything she’s been through but his calm manner and easy way with animals are too good to let go. It doesn’t take long before her work-based interest and her lonely heart intertwine but they both have baggage. Will Harriet end her spell of bad luck and will Tobias divulge his secret?

This is a cute shifter romance with an edge. It was an easy read with likeable characters although Tobias’ use of the word ‘sweetheart’ was a little too frequent for my liking. I did, however, really enjoy the addition of Clyde who gave the ranch a proper old cowboy feeling.

Frost Security: Richard by Glenna Sinclair

Jessica’s simple, happy life begins to disappear the moment her silent business partner dies. A few calls she can handle but when her friend suggests a security firm, she figures it can’t hurt. Inextricably being drawn to her security detail while dealing with ever increasing threats all semblance of her peaceful, happy life disappears. It doesn’t take long before the world as she knows it is shattered.

This is a romantic suspense, and the story contains plenty of suspense, threat, and malice but the romance is a little light for my taste. There’s no magical build-up and I think that lets the book down. Jessica is a nice enough character, and she is going through something traumatic but I would still expect to feel more during the so-called romantic moments. Richard is a fairly well-developed character, and I wanted to hear more angst, more feeling.

The ongoing story that will carry the series is sound and I would like to know what happens next but this particular story ended without really resolving the two main characters’ issues and that was disappointing. Still, the next book in the series may well appear on my Kindle.

Fight (Caged Trilogy #2) by H. G. Lynch

Having been caught and made prisoner once again, Tilly is helpless. The fact that Dominic is incarcerated with her makes everything worse. She doesn’t dare resist the witches request because Dominic will pay for it in pain and the witches know just how to cause pain.

The first book in the series brought up plenty of questions and many of them are answered in this story. Tilly’s whole life has been one long sentence of misery and servitude but that doesn’t stop her falling in love. Her strength and endurance shine through even when others around her turn their backs.

Frank’s orders cause major conflict and Tilly is still pulled between the two male wolves like an eternal triangle. This is not just a love story. Lynch is particularly adept at pulling readers into the action and creating an addictive story.
