Miss Frost Ices the Imp: A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost #2) by Kristen Painter

Jayne is enjoying her new role as the manager of the toyshop. She likes working with her best friend Juniper but the best thing about being in Nocturne Falls has to be her boyfriends, both of them. Greyson is a cute vampire with a sexy Irish accent and Cooper is a summer elf who was her first love back in college. She cannot possibly choose between the pair.

Her life becomes complicated once more when she opens a box and lets trouble out. What do you do when your cat starts talking?

Jayne is such a likable character that you can’t help but care about her but as for her love life I can’t help but wonder what’s on her mind. She needs to choose and my vote is on the vampire. Painter describes Jayne’s need for sweet treats too well, I can picture each and every dessert in detail and I’m not sure that’s a good thing because I’m now craving pastries, ice-cream, oh and a talking cat.

Murder Any Witch Way (Brimstone Bay #1) by N. M. Howell

The witches in Brimstone Bay are just as shaken as the rest of the inhabitants when a young girl is found murdered. It’s bad news for the Shadow Festival and anyone else with a little magic in them. River is sucked into the mystery and soon finds herself a potential victim of a killer who is trying to frame her friends.

This, not so average, murder mystery is set in an interesting world full of supernatural creatures who live alongside regular humans. It gives an interesting edge to the mystery as do the ghosts who help to solve the case. The added possibility of a future romance sets up interest for the rest of the series.

Gravity (Mageri #4) by Dannika Dark

Silver’s life is growing more and more complicated. There is more to her story than she thought was possible and her strengths show as she fights for those she loves. Her relationship with Logan is tested time and again but the Chitah remains by her side even when a new bond develops between her and her guard.

This series just gets better. Silver is such a strong character that her story alone would carry the book but add it to the unfolding lives of those around her and the story becomes a fully developed saga full of action, romance, heartbreak, humour, and everything in between.

This series is highly addictive and emotionally stirring, prepare to be completely immersed. I can also recommend the audio version of this story because the narrator is brilliant.

The Ghost Files (The Ghost Files v4, p2) by Apryl Baker

Mattie wakes up in hospital again but that doesn’t mean she’s out of action. With a dangerous father, a demon for a grandfather, and a guardian angel, not to mention her new friend the reaper, she has been kept busy. She must find Kayla’s killer before it’s too late. Dan’s abilities begin to look a lot like Mattie’s, if only he could master the sword that seems to appear from nowhere.

Mattie’s internal strength seems to know no limits but her body is starting to show signs of an overload. I think of all the fantastic characters within this series my favourite has to be Silas. Don’t judge me. The relationship between Mattie and the Malone brothers, including Dan, is starting to get complicated and with the arrival of the newly awakened Eric, AKA mirror boy, it throws another fan boy her way.

Baker left the ending on a bit of a cliff-hanger so I’ll be checking for the release date of the next book.

Impulse (Mageri #3) by Dannika Dark

impulse

Silver is coming to terms with being a mage and with the abilities that go with it. With Adam struggling to accept himself and Logan’s Gathering to deal with she isn’t prepared for the Chitah who seems intent on making her his, with or without her permission.

This series is becoming very addictive and there are several reasons for that. The characters are complex and exciting; the reader can easily become emotionally invested in them. The town of Cognito is full of intrigue and the world of paranormal creatures that Dark has created to fill the town has enough interest to keep the readers hooked.

In this story, we get to know Christian who is an ancient vampire with a comeback for any conversation but we also find out how Justice became who he is and as Silver’s guardian it’s an emotional experience.

Twist (Mageri #2) by Dannika Dark

Silver is suffering from boredom because as a learner mage she is kept protected and in near isolation by her guardian, Justice. Silver just can’t seem to keep herself out of trouble and enlists Adam’s help to reunite with an old friend from her human life, Sunny. When things go wrong, she learns that she is stronger than she realised and more determined than anyone could have anticipated.

I took a while to get into this series but Dark has serious talent and I couldn’t stay away for long. The worlds she creates are so realistic and full of exciting potential that it makes sense to build an entire series from them.

Silver is a strong female lead, and this is something Dark does well. Powerful, sexy characters, alpha males who submit to females, and strong conflict and external dangers. The stories are full of energy and are great for a little escapism but they can become addictive.

Twist features a slow-moving, beautiful, romantic development, and the speed at which it moves forward is unusual but refreshing. It also serves to open up another branch of shifter breed that I can’t wait to get my teeth into.

Vampire Soul (Heartblaze #1) by Shay Roberts

Emma has never fit into society and that has a lot to do with her gift. Being able to see someone’s soul tends to set her apart from most other people, that is until she meets Stefan. Feeling drawn to him saves her life but with so many people, human and others, chasing her she runs. Of course, running straight into a predator while chasing your haunted dreams isn’t quite the ticket to happiness she hoped it would be.

This story is a full-on adventure rather than a simple romance so don’t let the cover fool you. Not only is there a little love triangle to get your teeth into but several supernatural creatures who are hell-bent (excuse the pun) on taking Emma out of circulation.

Emma’s character is complicated and she might not always take the logical path but she doesn’t disappoint on action. She’s a strong female lead with an in-depth history that is released slowly throughout the book.

This is a series that should be read in sequence and if you like more than a carefree romance with your paranormal / supernaturals then get stuck in. I look forward to the next book.
