The Breakdown by B. A. Paris

Cass’s life had been wonderful until that fateful night but when she chooses the shortcut home, it changes the course of her life. Between the menacing calls and the constant forgetfulness, Cass doesn’t know where to go or who to turn to but she knows that she can’t keep her secret for much longer.

This thriller comes from a fragile woman’s point of view and it is terrifying because the reader feels Cass’s vulnerability and loneliness. It is an uncomfortable read which all thrillers should be and it certainly builds in suspense as the story moves forward.

I found the ending very satisfying, and I was quite relieved when Cass started eating again because food and drink had featured so prominently in the beginning. I like Paris’s ability to keep you guessing until the end.

The Breakdown

Miss Frost Ices the Imp: A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost #2) by Kristen Painter

Jayne is enjoying her new role as the manager of the toyshop. She likes working with her best friend Juniper but the best thing about being in Nocturne Falls has to be her boyfriends, both of them. Greyson is a cute vampire with a sexy Irish accent and Cooper is a summer elf who was her first love back in college. She cannot possibly choose between the pair.

Her life becomes complicated once more when she opens a box and lets trouble out. What do you do when your cat starts talking?

Jayne is such a likable character that you can’t help but care about her but as for her love life I can’t help but wonder what’s on her mind. She needs to choose and my vote is on the vampire. Painter describes Jayne’s need for sweet treats too well, I can picture each and every dessert in detail and I’m not sure that’s a good thing because I’m now craving pastries, ice-cream, oh and a talking cat.

Blood Vow (Black Dagger Legacy #2) by J. R. Ward

When Axe joins the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s Training program he intends to stay at arm’s length from the others especially Peyton and his Glymera pals. When a chance meeting throws him in the path of the lovely Elise all bets are off. Not only does he become her bodyguard, but he also finds a connection that he’d never believed was possible.

This is not just a romance but a coming of age novel. Axe finds more out about himself than he knew existed and becomes a valuable member of the team through his brave actions. Elise is yet another strong female as per Ward’s usual style but her character is also determined and challenging. The bond between the pair is strong but the reasons for them not to be together are getting in the way, causing a friction for all those around.

The story is yet another beautifully romantic episode to the Black Dagger Legacy with its intricately crafted world and amazing full-bodied characters.

Blood Vow

Closer (Mageri) by Dannika Dark

Kane is the kind of man who keeps his life simple and secluded. His gift as a Sensor is too much for him to handle and his relationships with others suffer because of it. When he comes face to face with a human killer who specializes in the brutality of women, there is only one thing he can do. That action sparks off a chain of events that lead him to somewhere he thought he’d never go and that isn’t just Breed jail.

This insular part of the series is Kane’s story, and it is beautifully told, highly emotional, and really brings Kane into the world that Dark has created. The romance is laced with tragedy which really brings out the tears but it is beautiful, nonetheless.

Closer

Blood Kiss (Black Dagger Legacy #1) by J. R. Ward

When Paradise enrolls into the Black Dagger training program, the first person she looks for is the shy guy she’d met at her receptionist posting. The person who first catches her eye, though, is her annoying friend Peyton. Within minutes of the First Night starting things begin to look bad but Paradise doesn’t have any intention of heading the same way the rest of the glymera females had done for centuries and so she fights.

This spin-off series fits nicely into the Black Dagger Brothers series and offers some new characters with needs of their own. As with all of Ward’s books, there are plenty of adult scenes to ramp up the romance and the intensity of her character building has remained strong. Her strong male and female leads are powerfully driven and exciting.

If you are looking to scratch a romantic itch with a little hardcore vampire action and you want to immerse yourself in the well-created and vastly detailed world look no further.

Blood Kiss

Try Not to Breathe by Holly Seddon

While Amy is suspended in a long-term coma Alex struggles to go from day to day without letting her alcoholism take control of her life. When she stumbles upon a story far more exciting than the one her editor is expecting she reawakens a chance to solve Amy’s cold case.

This psychological thriller works backward from Amy’s narration and in the present from Alex’s. The parallels between them slowly close in as their lives become entangled together. Not only is Alex getting closer to the truth, but she begins to understand her own illness. The novel feels like it is two stories pulled together and it works. Alex’s struggle with alcohol reminds me of The girl on the Train in some ways and it highlights the problems that surround the topic.

I’m giving this book four stars because although I really enjoyed it I would like to have known more about the emotional and psychological state of the attacker.

Try not to breathe

My Sister and Other Liars by Ruth Dugdall

When Sam’s sister is brutally attacked and left for dead Sam begins a perilous journey to solve the mystery denying herself food in the process. The journey takes her to places that no child should visit, but she’s not finished. Only from the relative safety of the Ana unit can she fully understand everything that has happened and finally learn to forgive herself.

This is a disturbing and emotional story told in a unique way. Sam’s emotional strength goes hand in hand with her physical fragility causing a juxtaposition within herself. The story delves into some of the darkest subjects imaginable and the innocence of Sam, Jena, and even Rob creates striking characters in a world of pain.

The story is a coming of age novel with a thriller setting and a detective narrative. Dugdall has created something dark, beautiful, and most of all memorable.
