Wives of War by Soraya Lane

Scarlet’s desire to find her fiancé, Thomas, is her priority when she joins the war effort as a nurse. Within hours she has formed a firm friendship with an Irish girl and together they learn just what it means to be a nurse in the midst of war. When Scarlet meets a handsome soldier before leaving England she finds herself inexplicably drawn to him and no amount of guilt can tear her heart away but the brutality of war is about to come crashing down on them all and romance becomes the last thing on their minds.

This is an emotional story about friendship and love but it’s not a straightforward romance. The era has been carefully researched and as we follow the lives of these women as they enter unimaginable horror we get a realistic preview into what it really would have been like.

The story kept me emotionally invested as well as intrigued. It is much deeper than your standard romance and the details are sometimes gory and tragically true to history. It is a book with historic value and most definitely a tearjerker.

Wives of war

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

Lo hopes the work-related cruise will help to shake the fear of the break in she suffered but within hours she realises that not only has her ex-boyfriend been invited but also, she has some serious mental scars leftover with the bruises. Somewhere in the Norwegian sea, everything starts to go wrong, and she doesn’t know who she can trust. It can only get worse.

Lo is the kind of character the reader likes, can identify with, but also wants to scream at. She can’t help but choose the wrong path every time and this is something we all recognise in ourselves from time to time. Her demise is inevitable and we read with a sinking feeling that is balanced by small rays of hope.

This thriller kept me reading but I can’t say it was a comfortable read. The confines of the boat were stifling and Lo’s anxiety was catching. I was on edge and because I couldn’t tell where the threat was coming from I felt almost as scared as the poor protagonist which is exactly what you want from a thriller.

The Blackburne Legacy (Bloodlines Legacy #1) by Apryl Baker

Alex has been locked up for years and when she’s finally released, she thinks it’s an opportunity to put the past behind her and get on with living her life. Within hours of settling into her new home with her brother trouble finds her and if it isn’t the bad boy Luka with his dangerous gypsy magic, then it is the fact that she’s concealing the madness that seems to be creeping back. The difference is that this time, Alex has friends who also have some pretty crazy secrets.

Alex is a complex character who doesn’t know or understand herself so her mysteries are unraveled slowly, much to the reader and the character’s surprise. Her past doesn’t just come back to bite her it barrels into her like a freight train and changes everyone’s lives which makes for a real action read.

I didn’t realise how much I enjoyed the story until I got to the end when the book hangover set in. Baker has a knack for hooking you in without you realising it so I can’t wait to read the next book.

The Breakdown by B. A. Paris

Cass’s life had been wonderful until that fateful night but when she chooses the shortcut home, it changes the course of her life. Between the menacing calls and the constant forgetfulness, Cass doesn’t know where to go or who to turn to but she knows that she can’t keep her secret for much longer.

This thriller comes from a fragile woman’s point of view and it is terrifying because the reader feels Cass’s vulnerability and loneliness. It is an uncomfortable read which all thrillers should be and it certainly builds in suspense as the story moves forward.

I found the ending very satisfying, and I was quite relieved when Cass started eating again because food and drink had featured so prominently in the beginning. I like Paris’s ability to keep you guessing until the end.

The Breakdown

Miss Frost Ices the Imp: A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost #2) by Kristen Painter

Jayne is enjoying her new role as the manager of the toyshop. She likes working with her best friend Juniper but the best thing about being in Nocturne Falls has to be her boyfriends, both of them. Greyson is a cute vampire with a sexy Irish accent and Cooper is a summer elf who was her first love back in college. She cannot possibly choose between the pair.

Her life becomes complicated once more when she opens a box and lets trouble out. What do you do when your cat starts talking?

Jayne is such a likable character that you can’t help but care about her but as for her love life I can’t help but wonder what’s on her mind. She needs to choose and my vote is on the vampire. Painter describes Jayne’s need for sweet treats too well, I can picture each and every dessert in detail and I’m not sure that’s a good thing because I’m now craving pastries, ice-cream, oh and a talking cat.

Blood Vow (Black Dagger Legacy #2) by J. R. Ward

When Axe joins the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s Training program he intends to stay at arm’s length from the others especially Peyton and his Glymera pals. When a chance meeting throws him in the path of the lovely Elise all bets are off. Not only does he become her bodyguard, but he also finds a connection that he’d never believed was possible.

This is not just a romance but a coming of age novel. Axe finds more out about himself than he knew existed and becomes a valuable member of the team through his brave actions. Elise is yet another strong female as per Ward’s usual style but her character is also determined and challenging. The bond between the pair is strong but the reasons for them not to be together are getting in the way, causing a friction for all those around.

The story is yet another beautifully romantic episode to the Black Dagger Legacy with its intricately crafted world and amazing full-bodied characters.

Blood Vow

Closer (Mageri) by Dannika Dark

Kane is the kind of man who keeps his life simple and secluded. His gift as a Sensor is too much for him to handle and his relationships with others suffer because of it. When he comes face to face with a human killer who specializes in the brutality of women, there is only one thing he can do. That action sparks off a chain of events that lead him to somewhere he thought he’d never go and that isn’t just Breed jail.

This insular part of the series is Kane’s story, and it is beautifully told, highly emotional, and really brings Kane into the world that Dark has created. The romance is laced with tragedy which really brings out the tears but it is beautiful, nonetheless.
