The Scattered & the Dead (Book 0.5) by Tim McBain & L.T. Vargus

I received this book for free in return for an honest review. There are people who reach out in times of need and trouble, and there are people who don’t. Decker is one of the latter. He has hoarded supplies for the crisis and sits out his time in his apartment. By the time he’s ready to join what’s left of society, well, there just isn’t much left to join.

This is a witty internal monologue and the beginning of an interesting series. The humour is dry and honest, and the story works well with the single character. I also thought that the length of the story was just about right, but the little preview into the next book in the series has definitely caught my interest. One thing I will say about this author duet is that they really know how to get into the mind of a character, and no matter what that poor unfortunate is going through it is told in an amusing manner.

John isn’t the most adventurous guy, and when the zombie apocalypse begins in his hometown he starts to wish he’d lived his life differently. He teams up with the neighbours and between the group they find the strength to move to a more suitable location, ASDA.

This book shows the inner workings of a man who wasn’t really prepared for the zombie apocalypse but stepped up anyway. John is a regular Brit and his responses to the ever worsening predicaments the apocalypse has put him in are recognisable to us all. The story is fast-paced with just the right amount of introspection to keep us willing John to survive. As a zombie fiction addict, I have just added this series to my favourites.

The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks

This is a comprehensive guide, it leaves nothing out. If you read this then you will be fully equipped to deal with the zombie apocalypse, saying that, you may not be able to finish it in time. The book is long, or at least it seems that way because it isn’t very engaging. I read it right to the end but I struggled to keep my attention on the words. The information within is brilliant but extracting it, not so great.

Zombies vs the Living Dead by Frank Tayell

George wasn’t quite ready for a peaceful retirement at the home but he hadn’t bargained for the excitement of being abandoned to zombies. George takes charge as they run low on food and begins to make plans to get away, but with the undead trying to eat the living dead, will any of them get out alive?

The concept of this story is brilliant and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The zombie action built up slowly but came to a spectacular end. I’m looking forward to what the rest of the series brings.

MZS: Boston By K. D. McAdams

Pat -O is not your average hero, and he most certainly isn’t the first person you would team up with when faced with a zombie apocalypse. Saying that, he seems to be managing okay. When he wakes that morning he finds a hot girl in his apartment, wearing his t-shirt, if only he could remember her name. She storms off, having been insulted by his drunken lack of memory, straight into a hungry horde of flesh-eaters. Thus begins the worst day of his life.

Pat-O, although not a quality male, is actually a likeable and honest protagonist. The reader doesn’t want him to get eaten by zombies but it does look like it’s inevitable at any given moment. He soon has a plan and a mission, and no zombie will stop him. This novella is funny, light-hearted, and realistic. It’s the sort of book you can happily steam through with pleasure.
